UFC 97 was a pretty entertaining card. It looked like Shogun knew his career with the UFC was on the line and had to bring back the Shogun from the days of Pride in order to win this fight.. He definitely succeeded, his submission attempt was very nice and his stand up was impressive, a KO over Liddell will definitely allow him to stay around in the UFC.
The Silva and Leites fight was very technical. The booing of the crowd was affecting my concentration on the fight. I understand a casual MMA fan wants to see knock outs and crazy ground and pound. But to me, I thought this fight was a true chess match. Leites is a technician on the ground and Silva has standup that is unmatched. Although I feel both fighters are very complete and have both great ground skills and stand up, you can't blame Silva for not wanting to engage on the ground everytime Leites was on his back (Leites is a world class BJJ technician); and you definitely can't blame Leites for not trying to engage with Silva in a stand up war (Silva has an 80% hit accuracy). So in some regard it was a stalemate when it came to either fighter trying to test the other fighter's strength. But overall, I felt that Silva definitely tried to entertain the crowd by doing some unorthodox kicks that you do not see often in MMA, not to mention his "dancing" and head movement was awesome. Sometimes you don't get a slobber knocker, but you can still appreciate a technical fight when you see one. Good job Sliva and Leites. Silva had a well deserved win.
