For the past 3-4 years I have been a huge fan of registry mechanic. It has a great assortment of tools that will allow you to keep your registry clean, compact, and efficient. Not to mention, with version 8, it has a great tool that configures Windows to run services in such a way that it improves start up and general performance significantly.
I typically run Registry Mechanic after I uninstall drivers or programs. Don't trust the standard uninstallers that software comes with to completely clear out your system, more than likely, there will be invalid or extra registry settings left over from the uninstall.
I use to always reformat my PC every 6 months or so to have that fresh, snappy Windows install, but after using Registry Mechanic, I rarely ever re-format my PCs.
Lastly, I bought the latest version for like $26 bucks, and it gave me 3 licenses, this worked out great because my girlfriend's laptop has a lot of those pre-installed applications and utilities that came with her Acer laptop, I removed most of them via uninstallers, but the ones she wanted to keep run faster after I ran the service tweaking utility as well as the general registry repair utility. And even better, I have 1 more license left for another computer.
Hope this review helps anyone who is in the market for a registry cleaning/optimizing program.
I have tested the program in both Windows Vista and XP and it works great.
Update: I also have been using the Registry Monitor that comes with Registry Mechanic 8, I like how I know what is going on with registry changes.
