AMD has announced its production of a new
6 core processor featuring new
45nm processor technology, the new processor is codenamed "Istanbul" and will be compatible with the current socket F (1207) motherboards with the simple upgrade of the bios.
The new processor will be supporting HyperTransport3 Technology (this depends on the type of system that the processors are used in whether it will support HT3 or not) and have
6mb L3 cache, they are intended to run at the same temperatures that the current processors run at to keep upgrade prices at a minimum and they expect the processors to have a
15-30 percent rise in performance over their current Opteron processors.
Now something about this is AMD has also announced that they are releasing for the first time ever their own CHIPSET! They will be releasing this platform in the second half of 2009 codenamed "Fiorano" They will still be supporting DDR2 memory on the Fiorano platform and announced that they will not be making the conversion over to DDR3 til 2010 until the prices of DDR3 go down to keep the affordability of AMD setups at a lower level of affordability.
The first platform that will be using DDR3 Memory will be called "Maranello" previously named "Piranha"
I believe this will be a great advancement for AMD in competing against Intel. They have already started to make an amazing comeback on Intel with their Phenom II processors giving the $500.00+ Quad Core mainstream Intels a run for their money at only HALF the price! yes I said HALF the price. It seems that AMD is making their way back to the top and I believe will soon be ahead of the market and may possibly be preferred over Intel. I think alot of the people out there that get gaming pc's today want the "BIGGEST BADDEST THING OUT THERE" theres a problem with that. its all about preference, theres advantages and disadvantages to Intel and same with AMD. That is why Intel is the current leading processor choice in gaming.
AMD also has
several new chips scheduled for release in 2009 after Shanghai hits the
market later this year. These new AMD processors include another 45-nm
processor, "Istanbul," which will contain six processing cores. In
2010, the company plans to release two additional processors, which
will take advantage of the Maranello chip set. These include
"Magny-Cours," which will use 12 processing cores, and "Sao Paulo,"
which will have six cores.
