MT-401UK 4-Port USB/VGA KVM Switch Review

Recently I needed a 4 port KVM switch that had USB keyboard/mouse support for 3 machines I have.

I also wanted something budget and was willing to risk getting a generic knock off for a cheap price.
That said, I went with the MT-401UK 4-Port USB/VGA KVM Switch.



The product has a sturdy design and is much higher quality than some of the "From China" products I have bought on ebay. The ebay seller I bought it from provided 4 pairs of USB/VGA cables and also a USB to PS/2 mouse and keyboard cable; so basically I didn't have to buy any additional wires for this setup.

Setup was a breeze; plug the VGA cable from the monitor into the KVM and the keyboard and mouse into the KVM (you can also plug in your PS/2 keyboard and mouse into the converter cable and plug it into the KVM that way).
In my case I have a USB keyboard and mouse, so I didn't use the converter cable.

Once I did that, I tested the KVM on 3 machines: 2 older machines I use for testing, and AMD K7 and an AMD Athlon II, the newest machine was my DVR which is an Intel Atom 940.

All machines worked great; please note that for my AMD Athlon II, the bios haulted because it didn't detect the keyboard/mouse since the KVM was not set to that PC when I booted it; therefore you may want to go into your bios and disable the boot haulting if keyboard is not detected.
In my case, I just rebooted the PC with the KVM set to that PC's port.
Another issue is that you may have to wait a moment for your PC to install the keyboard/mouse since it will most likely detect as new USB devices.

However, these 2 notes are commonplace with nearly any KVM, so really just a heads up for you.

Overall a great device for sharing your keyboard/mouse/monitor with multiple machines and don't let the "From China" generic tag fool you; its a well-made device. At the time of this article, I paid $20 (including shipping) for this product including all the cables mentioned in this review. I noticed some sellers sell this device for slightly cheaper but do not provide as many cables or free shipping.
