Left 4 Dead (L4D) - Survivor Mode tips

Here are some general hints and tips for survivor mode to get you started.

Choose the Right Gun
Although some people may prefer the M4 Assault Rifle to pickup smokers and to weaken the tank from long range, generally your team should all load up with Auto Shotguns just to ensure that the tank will not survive very long when he gets within close range. I usually weaken him with my double hand guns if I can spot him from a distance and let him have it with my auto shotgun as he gets closer. Your team should be aware of when the tank is incoming so you can all pull out your auto shotguns and light him up.

When there are no tanks around, your team should not use their primary guns, they should all use the double hand guns, only use your primary when the tank comes or if your team is getting overwhelmed with zombies and no one has a pipe bomb. If you don't, then you will run out of ammo fast.

Save your molotovs and pipe bombs
This can vary from map to map, but you should try to hold off as long as you can before you start wasting your supplies. For instance, in "The Drain", you don't have a lot of mollys or pipe bombs, so you should only use them later in the round (around 5-6 minutes or later). The Drain is a real easy map and you could probably go even longer. But for maps like "The Lighthouse", they give you a lot more supplies, so definitely use them, but use them wisely. We usually reserve the fire for the tanks, and weaken him as he climbs up the lighthouse. At about 3-4 minutes, we drop down and try to hold it off in the boiler room. Jump onto the water heaters and stand your ground there.

Typically you use your pipe bombs to reduce an attack if you are getting overwhelmed or if someone is down. But if your team is sharp, then most likely you will use them to transition to one part of the map to another. You typically transition when your supplies are exhausted in the location you are at, or if people need ammo.

Make smokers in-effective
Try to place your players in areas where a smoker pull will not be too harmful, if a player get's pulled down, then it could cost you the round. For instance, "The Drain" has a yellow gate where 2 players can stand next to while the other 2 players stand near the health packs. The smokers will try pulling the 2 players standing next to the yellow gate, but they will be ineffective. On the Lighthouse, when you are at the very top of it, I try running around it to negate the smoker's pull. You can usually hear him when he is about to pull.

Save gas tanks and propane
Gas tanks should be placed strategically before a round starts, typically people put them in areas where the horde and tank spawn from. Also they usually keep gas tanks near them but in an area where friendly fire doesn't accidently spark the tanks. The reason being is that later in the round they can throw the gas tanks out in front of them and use them to roast tanks and zombies. Propane tanks can be useful if setup properly just to weaken the tank or blow up a few zombies. Just make sure gas or propane tanks aren't too close together because they can do massive damage to your team when linked together.

Every map has their own niche on how to beat it. However, these general tips seem to work well on all of them.

Good luck.
